No wash up for Granny or Grandad today! Pope Francis has established a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, which takes place for the second time this Sunday 24 July on the theme ‘In old age they will still bear fruit (Ps 92:15)’. It’s a timely reminder for the world to be close to all the elderly and grandparents at this time of pandemic. As a society we have learned a lot from Grandparents’ stoicism and pragmatism in the face of so many challenges during the pandemic. Throughout his papacy Pope Francis has reminded us to value the many gifts of grandparents and the elderly. Not only are our young people called to be present in the lives of older people, but so too grandparents and elders have a mission to encourage young people on their faith journey. Our parishes and communities are always enriched by the inclusion of grandparents, elders, and the older generations. In his message Pope Francis reminds us that the Lord continues to send angels to console our loneliness and to remind us that ‘the Lord is with us always’. Pope Francis tells us that these angels sent to console us will at times have the face of our grandchildren, while at other times, the face of family members, lifelong friends, or those we have come to know during these trying times, when we have learned how important hugs and visits are for each of us.” So let us celebrate grandparents and those of an older generation (both living and dead), who have given lives of dedicated service to their families and communities. We are connected with them. We owe them a lot and just as they took care of us in our youth, our society must make sure to do the same for them in their weaknesses and declining years. Maybe grandchildren might like to bring grandparents for an Ice Cream today instead of the other way round!
